Cold and wintry weekend

[Updated 06:50 11/02/2017]

The weekend begins on a wintry note. Temperatures in Scotland plunged to -10C (14F) overnight, and much of the country has had snow showers which have given a covering in places.

Today wintry showers continue and at times they will be heavy. Accumulations of snow over high ground in the north could exceed 10cm. At lower levels there is a chance of rain or sleet being mixed in at times, especially later in the day.

A strong north easterly wind will make it feel bitterly cold with maximum temperatures ranging from to 3C (37F) in much of the UK to 6C (42F) in the south west. See the rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

Tonight a widespread frost returns with the lowest temperatures in Scotland. Eastern and central England see further wintry showers.

Tomorrow the showers continue but at lower levels they increasingly fall as rain or sleet. Through the course of the day the shower risk pushes northwards with drier periods becoming more widespread in the south.

By Monday it will be turning milder in southern counties but the northern half of the UK remains cold. As we head through the week the milder air steadily pushes northwards. Areas of high pressure to the east and south of the UK are expected to block the eastwards progression of weather fronts from the Atlantic. This should lead to a good deal of dry weather and in the south it could feel quite springlike. Buzz takes a look at the snow risk.

The 16 day GEFS shows cold weather in the short term but next week it become milder. The risk of rain increases towards the end of the month.
