Snow risk as winter returns

[Updated 08:15 08/02/2017]

Snow scene

Wednesday starts with rain in the north east. Elsewhere it is mostly dry and overcast, but clearer spells in the north west overnight have led to a frost.

Today the rain in the north east gradually spreads westwards into central regions and becomes lighter. As colder air pushes in from the east it will increasingly turn to snow, even at lower levels. The west remains mostly dry.

Temperatures range from 2C (36F) in the north east to 9C (48F) in the south west. See the rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

Tonight a sharp frost forms in central and western areas. In the east cloudier skies bring the risk of snow showers.

Tomorrow all areas have a very cold day and there will be a good deal of cloud. Light snow flurries are likely and near the east coast there could be a few heavier ones.

It's a similar picture on Friday but during Saturday the risk of sleet and snow becomes more widespread. The details are uncertain but some quite heavy falls of snow are possible with the worst conditions expected over the northern hills. Sunday remains cold with wintry showers.

Early next week milder air looks like pushing up from the south. By the middle of the week daytime temperatures could be approaching a springlike 14C (57F) in the south. Buzz takes a look.

The 16 day GEFS shows cold weather in the short term but during the first half of next week a milder air mass pushes up from the south. During the last week of February the risk of rain increases.
