Heavy rain pushing east

[Updated 07:05 31/01/2017]

Tuesday begins overcast across the UK. Eastern areas are mostly dry but in the west there are outbreaks of rain.

During the course of the day wet weather steadily spread eastwards. The rain becomes persistent and heavy at times but brighter skies return to Northern Ireland this afternoon.

Top temperatures range from about 5C (41F) in the north east to 12C (54F) in the south west. See the rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

Tonight it remains wet in central and eastern England. Elsewhere it becomes drier with clear skies returning to the north and west. A of frost is possible in Scotland by the morning.

Tomorrow rain gradually clears away from eastern areas. Sunny spells follow on for a time but during the afternoon another area of wet weather pushes into the west.

Through the rest of the week it remains unsettled. Small secondary areas of low pressure are expected to track across the UK during Friday and the weekend. These bring the likelihood of heavy rain and gale force winds, so some travel disruption is possible. After a mild start temperatures dip back towards the early February average.

Next week there is a chance of colder conditions returning from the east. Buzz takes a look.
