Cold and bright for many

[Updated 08:30 22/01/2017]

Red sky

Sunday begins frosty in much of the country with temperatures falling to -7C (19F) locally in the south. In parts of the west and north thicker cloud is bringing some patchy rain and snow.

During the rest of the day it stays cold and dry in central and eastern England. Across the west thicker cloud brings the risk of some light showery rain or snow this morning, but it should become dry in the afternoon. In Scotland and Northern Ireland patchy outbreaks of rain or snow continue.

Top temperatures range from 4C (39F) in the north and east to 9C (48F) in the south west. See the rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

Tonight wintry showers in the north fade away to leave dry conditions. A widespread and sharp frost returns to much of the UK and some fog patches are likely to form.

Tomorrow most of the UK has a dry and bright day but it could be cloudier in the north west. It will generally be cold but in the south west and across Northern Ireland temperatures edge a little higher.

Through the middle part of the week central and eastern areas probably keep the sunny days and cold nights. In the west it becomes milder and cloudier with a risk of rain at times. As we head into the weekend more unsettled weather may gradually spread southeastwards bringing the risk of rain to all regions.

Buzz takes a look at the prospects.

Ensembles at a glance

The 16 day GEFS ensemble shows rather cold weather in the short term. In the medium term it slowly turns milder and more unsettled with rain eventually reaching all regions.
