The weekend is off to a cold start with temperatures widely close to 0C (32F). In the north and around coastal counties there are scattered wintry showers but elsewhere it is dry.
Today wintry showers continue near the east coast but in the west they turn back to rain as milder air begins filtering in. Some wintry showers are likely to spread across the south but elsewhere it should be mostly dry for a time. During the evening outbreaks of rain push into the far north west.
Temperatures range from 2C (36F) in Scotland to 9C (48F) in the south western peninsula. See the rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.
Tonight clear spells lead to a frost in southern and central areas. In the north the rain becomes persistent and pushes southwards. The rain could be preceded by a spell of snow.
Tomorrow morning wet weather affects much of England and Wales. The south east could have some snow to begin with but this should turn back to rain as temperatures start to pick up. In the west the rain becomes patchier and it will be a much milder there.
Next week high pressure becomes dominant again. This leads to dry and chilly weather weather in the south with a risk of nighttime frost. The north west stays milder with patchy spells of rain at times.

The 16 day GEFS ensemble shows predominantly cold weather in the south but a milder period in the north west during the first half of next week. The last week of January may be more mixed with an increasing risk of wet and milder weather.
