Thursday begins cold in the northern of the UK with snow showers mostly in the west. In the southern half the east is dry but outbreaks of rain are pushing into the west.
Today wet weather pushes eastwards across southern and possibly central counties. On its northern and western edges the precipitation increasingly turns to sleet and snow. Some heavy bursts are expected, and over higher ground accumulating snow may cause disruption. The north has sunny spells but wintry showers continue.

Tonight the rain and snow gradually clears the south east. Snow showers showers continue in the north and become increasingly heavy in the north east. It will be a very cold with a widespread frost.
Tomorrow frequent snow showers spread southwards across eastern England. Elsewhere a mix of sunny spells and snow showers continues. It will be cold.
The weekend begins with a widespread frost. Snow showers continue near the east coast but elsewhere it should be mostly dry. On Sunday a disturbance could push southeastwards bringing a mix of rain, sleet and snow.
Next week high pressure builds towards Scandinavia. This leads to cold weather across the south but in the north west temperatures will be closer to average early on. Snow showers are likely in East Anglia and the south east times and in the north west patchy rain is possible. Buzz takes a look at today's snow risk.
The 16 day GEFS ensemble shows cold conditions next week but the north west becomes milder for a time. The last week of January may be more mixed.
