Snow in places this week

[Updated 07:10 09/01/2017]

Ducks in snow

The new working week begins with mixed weather but a big change is on the way during the coming days. This morning wet and windy weather is affecting the north and west but other areas are dry.

Today outbreaks of heavy rain push southeastwards reaching southern regions by the early afternoon. In the north clearer conditions return, but showers develop and turn wintry over high ground.

Temperatures range from 5C (41F) in the north to 10C (50F) in the south. See the rainfall radar for the latest view.

Tonight heavy showers continue in the north west with snow over the hills. Elsewhere it becomes dry and chilly after early rain clears from the south east.

Tomorrow should be dry and bright in central and eastern areas. In the west cloud thickens and patchy rain develops. Temperatures will be close to the seasonal average.

During Wednesday early rain clears away from the south east. In the north it will be very windy and much colder with showers increasingly turning to snow. Through Thursday and Friday a cold northwesterly flow covers the country bringing frequent snow showers to the north. These are likely to give significant accumulations and cause travel disruption. In the south there should be more dry weather but even here snow showers are possible.

Forecast confidence for the weekend is low but there is a chance of a spell of rain, sleet and snow spreading eastwards. Buzz takes a look at the snow risk.

Ensembles at a glance

The 16 day GEFS ensemble shows colder conditions and a risk of snow during the first week. Later on it turns drier and a large temperature spread develops but on balance rather rather cold conditions are favoured.
