Thursday begins with patchy fog and frost across the southern half of the UK. In the north it is milder and outbreaks of rain are affecting Scotland.
Through the day the risk of rain continues in northern and western Scotland. There could also be a few spots of rain in Northern Ireland, north western England and Wales. Elsewhere it remains dry but fog will be slow to lift.
It will be milder than recent days with temperatures ranging from about 6C (42F) in the south east to 13C (55F) in Scotland. See the rainfall radar for the latest view.
Tonight heavier spells of rain develop in western Scotland. Elsewhere a murky night is on the way and to the south of London it could be cold enough for a touch of frost.
Tomorrow a cold front pushes southeastwards into northern England bringing outbreaks of rain. Colder conditions follow into Scotland and wintry showers develop. Southern and central regions have a dry day.
During New Year's Eve the band of rain spreads southwards and on its back edge there could be a few flakes of snow as Arctic air catches up with the cold front. As New Year's Day progresses brighter conditions push southwards but in the north wintry showers continue.
Forecast details for next week are uncertain. After a quiet start another Arctic plunge is forecast to develop during the second half of the week. Beyond this there is a low to moderate risk of high pressure building over Scandinavia and bitterly cold Siberian air moving in from the east. Buzz looks ahead to January.
The 16 day GEFS ensemble shows a cold snap developing around the New Year. Temperatures then pick up but it quickly turns colder again. Through the second week of January a cold and possibly changeable theme is favoured.
