Thursday begins with patchy fog and a widespread frost across the southern half of the UK. The north is milder and cloudier.
Through the day most areas remain dry and sunny spells develop, but in places the fog will be slow to lift. In the north west thicker cloud brings patchy outbreaks of rain.
Central and eastern areas have a chilly day, especially where fog lingers. The south west and north west will be milder. See the rainfall radar for the latest view.
Tonight frost and fog return to central and eastern England. Elsewhere it will be less cold and outbreaks of rain affect western and northern Scotland.
Tomorrow intermittent spells of rain are likely in the north west and in western Scotland could become quite heavy. Elsewhere it remains dry.
As we head through the weekend high pressure becomes centred in the Atlantic and a cold front sweeps down across the UK. This brings a band of rain southwards and on the back edge there is a chance of it turning to snow as arctic air catches up.
Forecast details for next week are uncertain. After a cold start it may become milder for a time but a second arctic plunge probably develops during the second half of the week. Beyond this there is a low to moderate risk of high pressure building over Scandinavia and bitterly cold Siberian air moving in from the east.

The 16 day GEFS ensemble shows a cold snap developing around the New Year. Temperatures then pick up but it quickly turns colder again. Through the second week of January mostly dry and chilly weather is favoured.
