Bank Holiday Tuesday begins cold and frosty across the southern half of the UK. The north is generally milder and a band of light rain is affecting western Scotland.
Through the day it remains dry with sunny spells and variable amounts of cloud in most of the country. In the north west patchy outbreaks of rain continue this morning but it should become drier in the afternoon.
Maximum temperatures range from about 4C (39F) to 7C (45F). See the rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.
Tonight frost and patchy fog return to England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland will be cloudier and windier and in the west some rain is likely.
During the next few days high pressure continues to bring dry weather to the southern half of the UK but it will be chilly with nighttime frost and fog. The north west stays more changeable.
As we head towards the New Year there are signs of a significant change as high pressure becomes centred to the west of the UK and much colder arctic air spreads southwards. At this stage the initial cold plunge doesn't look like lasting for long, but computer models are suggesting the first half of January could bring a more wintry and mixed flavour to the weather than December.

The 16 day GEFS ensemble shows a cold snap developing around the New Year. Thereafter a more changeable and at times cold pattern is suggested.
