Wintry outbreak on the way?

Rain has cleared southwards overnight to leave a chilly and dry start to Boxing Day in the south. In the north there are heavy wintry and across Scotland it is very windy. 

Through the day wintry showers continue in the north but during the afternoon they should become lighter and more scattered. Elsewhere it stays dry and sunny periods develop.

Maximum temperatures range from about 4C (39F) in the north to 8C (46F) in southern coastal counties. See the rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

Tonight patchy outbreaks of rain affect the north west. In the rest of the country clear periods develop and it will be chilly with a patchy frost.

During the next few days high pressure brings dry weather to the southern half of the UK but it will be chilly with an ongoing risk nighttime frost and fog. The north west remains more changeable.

As we head towards the New Year there are signs of a significant change as high pressure becomes centred to the west of the UK and much colder arctic air spreads southwards. At this stage the details are uncertain but the chance of early January bringing a wintry spell of weather and the possibility of snow is increasing.

Ensembles at a glance

The 16 day GEFS ensemble shows a good deal of dry weather in the south but a greater risk of rain in the north west. By the New Year colder conditions are favoured.
