Tuesday starts with quiet and quite chilly conditions but a change to much more unsettled weather is on the way in the coming days. Forecast details are subject to change but there is a risk of high impact weather.
This morning bright spells develop quite widely, but in western England and Wales it will be cloudier with patchy outbreaks of light rain. During the afternoon wet and very windy weather pushes into the north west of the UK.
Maximum temperatures range from about 6C (42F) to 8C (46F). See the rainfall radar for the latest view.
Tonight rain in the north west pushes southeastwards reaching southern England by the morning. Clearer conditions follow it but heavy showers develop in the north west and over high ground these are likely to fall as snow.
Tomorrow wet weather in the south continues into the afternoon. Other regions have a brighter day but wintry showers pepper the north west.
On Thursday the north has further showery spells of rain with snow over the hills. Elsewhere it should be mostly dry.
Very unsettled weather is expected late in the week. A deep area of low pressure tracking to the northwest of the UK on Friday could bring 90mph wind gusts to the far north with gales in much of the country. Saturday may bring something of a respite but another storm system racing in from the Atlantic looks set to bring a repeat performance on Christmas Day.
