Christmas storm risk?

[Updated 07:10 19/12/2016]

Stormy weather

The new working week starts with quiet conditions but as we head towards Christmas it will become increasingly unsettled. Forecast details are uncertain but there is a risk of high impact weather leading to travel disruption.

Today begins mostly dry and chilly but in the north west it is damp. As we head through the day patchy outbreaks of rain push westwards across southern and central England. Elsewhere there will be a good deal of dry weather with brighter spells in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Maximum temperatures range from about 6C (42F) to 9C (48F). See the rainfall radar for the latest view.

Tonight the band of rain spreads into Wales, as well as western and northern England. There could be some wet weather in the far north west too but elsewhere it will be mostly dry and where cloud breaks a touch of frost develops.

Tomorrow wet and windy weather pushes into northern and western regions. Central and eastern counties remain dry and quite chilly.

As we head through the middle and second half of the week unsettled weather becomes established. Wet and windy periods develop with the worst conditions likely in the north west. There is a risk of it becoming stormy and in the north it could be cold enough for snow at times, especially over higher ground.
