Tuesday begins damp and murky across much of the UK and it is quite mild. Northern Scotland is drier and colder with a touch of frost locally.
During the day patchy spells of rain steadily spread northeastards and although most of these will be light a few heavier bursts are possible. In the west sunny spells develop this afternoon and Scotland should have a mostly dry day with some brightness.
Maximum temperatures range from about 6C (42F) in the north to 12C (54F) in the south west. See the rainfall radar for the latest view.
Tonight intermittent outbreaks of rain are likely in western Scotland and Northern Ireland but elsewhere it becomes mostly dry. It will be quite mild.
Tomorrow heavier and more persistent rain affects western and northern regions. The south and east have a mostly dry day.
During Thursday and Friday it stays changeable in the west but in the east a good deal of dry weather is expected and any rain is likely to be patchy. By the weekend high pressure builds back and keeps it mostly dry, but Atlantic disturbances may continue to bring rain into the north west. Temperatures fall back towards the mid December and some patchy nighttime frost is possible.

The 16 day GEFS ensemble shows a changeable and mild picture early in the period before a drier and cooler spells develops. There is a chance of colder conditions developing late next week.
