I'm surprised the late May warm spell didn't beat that temperature.

19.9c was the highest May temperature here...wind off the sea during late May. 203 hours of sun though...almost the same as June and July combined!

[Edit: managed 21.7c here today so warmest day of the year!]

As expected, the smell of BBQs is kicking in. My house is starting to smell like the inside of MacDonalds already. Bit yucky if you ask me.

Do you think mine might smell any better? - I'm working on chicken satay for later. Just a bit too hot for me today (37C) - having a little wide awake siesta with the air-con at max power.

Another disappointing weekend day. I tried to sit in the garden but it's too cloudy and cool. 16c with a nagging SEly breeze.

Although the last three weeks have been better than June and the first half of July, that's not saying much. Sunshine for the summer so far is about 60% of the average here.

15 of the last 17 summer months now with below average sunshine. It's relentless.

And lo, it came to pass. The heavens doth opened and rain of heavy proportions did fall on the heads of the righteous people of the west during the Sabbath day. Yet the sinners to the south and to the east did continue to bake under golden sunshine and more than respectable temperatures. By the time of the breaking of the bread - or carving of the roasted lamb if you prefer a more substantial meal - the plague of raindrops had ended, but by this time it was too bloody late as the day had already been ruinedeth.

What a familiar parable this was, having been repeated endlessly for many summers past. and no comfort could be found in the forthcoming holiday of the moneylenders, as more rain would surely be sent from the heavens to ruin yet another extended weekend.

..... and the crummy summer continues down in Cornwall. Four or five days or rain, severe gales a few days ago, more rain this morning. Been so wet this summer we have serious mould issues in the house. What a pathetic climate here. Feel bad for the people who spent hundred or thousands £s taking a holiday here, better spent going to the med. Last summer was crap too!

Whereas on the other end of the scale, my lawn is now starting to show drought-related stress by slowly turning brown in places. I'm trying to keep it as green as I can - especially the recent re-seeded area. I'd be glad to take some of that rain off your hands to save me the effort of having to keep hand watering it - especially since the last time I saw "proper rain" (more than 1 mm) was 15 days ago!

Does highlight the real contrast in conditions over a relatively short distance - and all in the same longitude!

Yes, I was in Lancashire this weekend and the weather was poor. As far as I can tell it's really only NW Scotland and SE England that have managed a decent summer (or at least parts of summer). In between it's been forgettable (at best).

Certainly here in Fife it's been truely awful, as we trundle through a third consecutive summer month of below average sun and above average rain. As I've posted before all made worse by a run of poor summers since 2007.

Hopefully next year breaks the cycle!

Don't.   I would hope most went to Cornwall for the scenery, culture and history - not to get cancer.

I had to post on here because I am sick of reading on the model output thread about how warm it is in the south east, indeed I think that thread is dominated by folk who live south of Watford !

Here in the north summer has still to arrive, ok we have had the odd dry and fairly warm day in August but have had no spell of fine weather and the absolute max for summer 2012 is still a miserable 23c!

No it just won't do, here in the north this summer has been the worst since at least 1974 and probably longer than that, to be honest I am almost looking forward to autumn when at least I expect the weather to be crap.

The last 13 months in the north of england has been shocking, not that you would know that reading the model output thread.

It's been a decent August up here in the NE so far. Sure we've had the odd rainy day and a few thundery showers, but we've also had plenty of sun!

Although a improvement in some respects on the previous 2 months, here August will be wetter than July. Below average sunshine aswell with temps perhaps slighty above average. At least we have had the odd day above 20C, unlike the other months. Summer max looks likely to be 21.4C, recorded earlier this month. Got to agree with Andy Woodcock's view on this summer.
