Perhaps then that's the Expressthesaurus entry for "risk of cooler than average weather with wintry showers on the hills in the north, as the air is coming from a northerly quarter"?

Although I guess that would (a) not fit on the page and (b) not sell papers ;)

Surely if the wind is coming form Iceland, it's an Icelandic blast?

Although I think "Normal October Weather Forecast in October" would be a far more accurate headline.

Quote:
BRITAIN will be battered by an Icelandic blast from Iceland next week – bringing the sort of weather more usually associated with autumn months like October. Forecasters last night warned the mercury will plummet to near freezing in some Highland glens at night, with daytime temperatures lower than this time last year when, although we at the Express warned of freezing weather, most places were experiencing an exceptionally warm heatwave.

Higher summits in the Scottish Highlands and maybe even in some parts of northern England (Skiddaw, Scafell and Hevellyn) could see their first dusting of snow of the week sometime next week , while the entire country faces colder conditions than you get in extreme heatwaves, and possible frosts. Just as happened last year, and the year before and in fact every October in recorded history. Forecasters said the bitter weather is likely to remain for the next few months with significant snow on Scottish hills by the end of the year. This is being caused by a rare meteorlogical phenomena called autumn and winter.

Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, said: “We could well see some bitter cold temperatures sometime in the next few months. Although we might not. And in any case I haven't a clue when.

“We are looking at a cold pool of air sweeping in from the north sending temperatures plunging. Somewhere. Though not necessarily in Britain. Possibly within the next 10 weeks. "

All true

Yep and remember it's 10p cheaper than any other paper. So real signs anywhere else of this vague article as yet.

UK Outlook for Friday 5 Oct 2012 to Sunday 14 Oct 2012:

A mixture of bright or sunny spells and showers to start the  period, the showers most likely heaviest and most frequent in the northwest, with a risk of thunder. There is a risk of more persistent heavy rain for a time across England and Wales on Friday. Windy at first with northwestern areas most likely to experience some gales. On Sunday and for the start of the next week, conditions are expected to become generally drier and more settled, with a chance of overnight frosts. Thereafter, there are large uncertainties, although the risk of rainfall increases in some areas. Temperatures are more likely to be below average than above, with a continuing risk of overnight frosts.

Updated: 1236 on Sun 30 Sep 2012

UK Outlook for Monday 15 Oct 2012 to Monday 29 Oct 2012:

Indications are that this period of October is likely to see fairly mixed autumnal weather across the UK. There will be some dry and bright periods, interspersed with showers or longer periods of rain. Rainfall amounts in the south in particular are more likely to be above average than below. There are hints that some northwestern parts of the UK may be drier than normal for late October. Temperatures are likely to be generally close to average, or perhaps a little below at times with some chilly nights possible and some wintry showers for upland parts of Scotland.

Updated: 1237 on Sun 30 Sep 2012

Improved outlook from METO and strong hints of northern blocking (highlighted, note especially the rainfall signal)

Somehow me thinks that the MetO is not the source of this headline, just a hunch! :)
