Buxton Derbyshire had "summer" in May this year, for five days.

What's been worse here is the lack of sun. Even last year had more sun than this rubbish. Total of 263 hours sunshine here since June 1st. Last summer had 412 hours sun up to this point. This is truly shocking and phenomenal by all accounts. June was more like October and in fact it was even duller, and about the same average temperature as last October, although that month managed 25°C unlike flaming (crap) June 2012. 

As with last summer convective activity has been dead in the water here again even though everywhere to my north, south, east and west has had plenty of activity. There have to be geographical reasons why storms don't form here, or dissipate on arrival, or avoid Fuxton altogether. 

2010: -11.0°C (20/12) / 26.6°C (23/05) / 3 thunderstorms
2011: -5.3°C (29/01) / 26.6°C (27/06) / 1 thunderstorm
2012: -7.3°C (08/02) / 25.8°C (24/05) / 1 thunderstorm

Don't.   I would hope most went to Cornwall for the scenery, culture and history - not to get cancer.

Not a moan, I know, but it has to be said that, despite the general sense going into AUgust that nothing amazing was on the cards, the quality of this month has rather snuck up on us - at least here. Checking my records, every day this month so far, apart from the 1st and the 6th have had a max temp above 20°C, and the other 2 days were 19.9°C and 19.8°C. I have never seen such a long run of days above 20°C in 5 and a half years in Durham (although no day has hit 25°C, so nothing "excessive" (for Durham)). Yes there have been showers, but most days have been more than usable and have seen the kids in the paddling pool. Average temp 16.2°C. This is about 1.4°C above any month I have records of.

It doesn't completely make up for May, June, and July, but August has been quite remarkable for here.

Aye, we've not had any exceptionally hot days down here - but likewise, nearly every day has been average or above, bothin terms of daytime max and overnight min.   As a result, this is looking like one of my warmest summer months for several years!

And rainfall remains just below average here as well.

As we approach the end of the meteorological summer, I'll award this season a tentavive 8/10. It would have been 9 but last weekend's vile weather rather spoiled it. However, overall it's been wonderful: cool for much of the time, a warm and pleasant August (with one exception) and plenty of rain to keep the garden and pond happy. A good summer IMO.

Completely agree  I've been working outside for pretty much the whole of August and apart from some entertaining downpours at times, the weather has been pretty good! Plenty of sunshine, and it hasn't felt cold at all  Even the winds haven't been that strong for here, which is a huge bonus

Not to mention the dryness around here where at least 50% of grass areas are now turning brown. Mind you, it has been 19 days ago since I saw "proper rain" (the type that soaks into the soil) with 7.2 mm on the 4th August. Since then it had come in 1 mm-type overnight showers here and there (not enough to touch the sides) with no rain at all in the past 14 days straight.
   My beef is how that lack of real rain is causing my lawn to suffer. Again as I hand water the recently reseeded area (so THAT's what caused it to stop raining!) every now and then as I don't have a hose. I also didn't like the excessive humidity last week as temperatures got up to 24 C here at my coastal location - but that's all in the past now - thanks goodness.

My only complaints about this month are below par sunshine totals (90.8 hours so far) and the lack of any hot days (Highest max 24.6ºC)

Interesting really since I'd say Stoke has had average temps and below par sunshine levels. Even during the warm spells, temps were pegged back here compared to areas to the North, South, East and even West in some cases. The worst storms missed this area bar the other night, mainly to the South of Stafford or West. It's been very non-eventful really.

Ouch, and I thought our 316 hours of sun to date was very poor (average summer = 556 hours).

That post illustrates perfectly yet another summer with massive regional variation. I'd give the summer a 3/10.

Very grey, frequently damp, predominantly cool. The lack of any settled spell where you could arrange a party/BBQ a week in advance, with a modicum of confidence that it would be settled and reasonably warm.

I look out for 'beach weather' - where it's warm & sunny enough to spend a day on the beach and want to cool down in the sea. I can recall just one this summer in this region that coincided with a weekend (and we'd already arranged a weekend in the Lakes).

We are at a miserable 226hrs of sunshine for the summer so far :(

(For comparison in an average summer the total value would be about 470hrs at this stage)

To be fair August has been a good deal better than June or July reaching almost mediocre standards, although to be honest it could hardly h ave been worse than June or July!

At least its nearly over now, the terrible summer of 2012.

I have to do some proper statistics but a quick glance over the last 50 years and I reckon this is the worse summer since at least 1972, and maybe a lot longer than that.

Absolute max here is just 23c, I am struggling to find a summer in Penrith's 107 year record that can match such a pathetic performance.

Add in the very high rainfall totals of June and July and you will struggle to find a summer as miserable as this one.

However, the jury is out and i will let you know.
