    The Twilight Zone

Okay, it's just a bunch of 30 seconds long exposures I've taken outside my house at 4 am.
It's where for some reason or other I was having a restless night, so rather than kept tossing and turning and tossing some more in bed, I ventured out to the front of my house. It was when I noticed what a lovely moonlit night it was.
Despising the increased light pollution, even the stars were twinkling away . . . as these following set of pictures shows (none of those has had their contrast or brightness enhanced):

Below: if you look carefully to the cloud top, you can just about make out some KH waves!

Below: In the center of the picture is the culprit of the increased light polluction; the new shopping center all lit up with flood lighting around it's parameter. So much for being enviromentally friendly! Steve (Gusty) will confirm this for me. See how it lights up the altocumulus above it.

And finally, a starscape for the astrologers amongst you. Can you see the Great Bear? . . . Nor can I. oShy

Well, managed to get this far without using the phrase: " Tis a braw bricht moonlit nicht the nicht"  . . . . D'OH!

    Re: The Twilight Zone

Thanks for all the lovely comments everyone. I wanted to do a Jamie R-style 30-minutes-long-exposure-star-trail type shot tonight but unfortunately the skyscape is full of low cloud crud, as the picture below shows.
This is a 90 seconds long exposure, taken at midnight, from my front door:

Still, it's all good practice for me. oBig Smile

Very nice IanoApprove. Not a time of day I often see much of...

Agree about the light pollution - I wonder how much CO2 that is responsible for in a year. Given how picky the building control is now about the insulation in improvements to domestic buildings, it's pretty infuriating that commercial developments still seem to be able to get away with energy wastage on a massive scale - and all paid for by the silly prices we pay in those new shops, but of course the developers of course don't care about that. Sorry I'm getting a bit off topicEmbarrassed

Thanks for taking a peek at this thread, everyone.
Hi, Daz. I'm still feeling my way through the murky world of long-exposure photography but after much trial and error and asking around I'm told that for star trail shots the following settings seem to work the best: The white balance was set to auto, ISO: 400. f8 for aperture, focus set manually to near infinity (but not all the way round to infinity). And if the camera has a noise reduction function, engage that but it will mean the camera being out of action for as long it takes to process the image as it had done to take the image itself.
And here's the tricky bit; for the actual exposure, I used the camera's "bulb" setting where the shutter was manually operated using a wireless remote control (press to open shutter and again to shut it at a later time - this way it prevents you shaking the camera when you touch it).
All I need now is a night of crystal clear starry skies . . . and looking at the forecast I have a feeling it's going to be quite a while before such an opportunity arises. oShy
Of course, all of this technical mumbo jumbo will mean absolutely nothing to the average compact camera owner . . . so how come that some of my most memorable pictures had been taken with my little Fuji A900?! oBlack Eye
However, my D40 is great for taking more experimental "thinking outside the box" pictures and I've taken some real corkers lately.
