10 years since this event, 18th January 2007 was a memorable say for some parts of the UK when severe gales struck from a system that was called Kyrill

11 people were killed as a result of this storm in the UK

I remember the storm hitting its peak for NW England just after midday that day. It was one of the worst gales to hit the region since the Christmas Eve 1997 storm and for a time it was hairy. A couple of neighbours lost roof slates, one damaging a conservatory.

I remember that very well, caused distruction across our region! I had a hospital appointment, had to hold onto a lamp post as the wind was threatening to throw me off my feet - got back in car and it was rocking!

Alan in Medlock Valley - Oldham's frost hollow. 103 metres above sea level.

I am surprised it hasn't drawn more comments. It was a notable gale and made an impact. The evening rush hour was chaos. They had to close the M60 Barton Viaduct and the  M6 Thelwall viaducts, so you can imagine the chaos!

Remember this well. I worked in Birmingham at the time. Birmingham New Street closed and we decided the only thing for it was to retire to the pub. At one point it looked as if we would have to book into a hotel for the night. I was lucky, eventually managed to get on one of the few trains out that night.

Remember it well. Didn't a wall blow over in Manchester, killing a young girl?

A colleague of mine, who lived in Bolton & was coming up to retirement, had gone to visit a client on the Wirral. The Runcorn Bridge was closed in addition to the Barton & Thelwall crossings, so the only places to cross the Mersey/Ship Canal between Liverpool and Manchester were central Warrington and the narrow toll bridge at Warburton. He was stuck on the M56, then through Warrington, for about 4 hours.

My own commute home was a b*tch, too, especially trying to come off the M62 at j8.

I also think this may have been the first time I heard the Beetham Tower howling! They changed the design of the 'fin' thing afterwards, but that howl was fantastic! Could hear it right across Manchester.

It must have missed me (as usual) as I don't remember this storm at all.

Interesting, didnt know it was called Kyrill, However there is footage on my phone from a storm years ago, which subsequently updated into Google photos a few months back.   Just did a quick search on the date of 18th Jan... bingo. Same event.

A Tree was blocking my bus route to work as the trains were off  (Wirral to Liverpool) I filmed it to show my boss

(apols for poor quality)

We were forced down a few ruotes that day as there were alot of downed trees... I dont think weve had as a sever storm since, though some have gone close.

The amount of damage i remember being quite incredible.  Took me about 3 hrs to get to work that day,

I had never heard of this storm and then remembered that I was living in Argentina at the time so that explains it!  I returned to the UK a few days after this and remember it being very cold and even snowed in central London.
